Blackberry
Rubus fruticosus
Blackberry is a very recognizable plant in the PNW, known for their sweet tasting berries and thorny aggressively growing vine habit. The leaves of blackberry are also edible and have quite a long history of uses related to wellness including as an astringent tonic tea as well as topical applications like lotions.
Due to their aggressive growth, they require yearly maintenance to keep the vines from climbing over buildings and fences. Most of the time, we employ our goat herd to maintain these blackberry thickets for which they eat the newest tender growth, cane and all.
