When we set out to make a calendar, it made sense to include all of the 13 archetypes that adorn your favorite tea canisters. Why couldn’t these critters, and their archetypal relationship to ourselves, all represent a time period within a calendar year? Considering 13 divides into 365 (or 366 in 2024) roughly 28 times, and that moon cycles reset on average a bit more than 28 days, it made sense to use a 13 month, 28 day calendar that used the moon, instead of the sun, as the celestial body of importance. The year’s final two days fall outside of the 13 months and serve as a space for reflection. The result is a calendar that blends the science of celestial tracking, with the archetypal storytelling common in Chinese and zodiac calendars.

Because 28 days does not reflect a full moon cycle, each archetype’s month will start on a moon cycle about one phase before the phase that began the previous period. This means that each month begins on a different moon cycle, and every year one of our archetypes will begin their designated period on a full or new moon. This year that archetype is the Ally, whose full moon kicks off the period of March 25th through April 21st.
